Typing Test

Code typing test

Code has many symbols, such as braces, brackets, quotes and semicolons. A normal typing test does not train these keys.

This test gives you short code snippets in many languages. You type them with their spaces and new lines.

The test starts in Code mode with 60 seconds. Use the buttons to change the time.

Take the test

Click the text and type. The timer starts on your first key.

Time left: 60 s

SELECT name, age FROM users WHERE age > 18 ORDER BY name;↵ with open("notes.txt") as f:↵ lines = f.read().splitlines()↵ let x = 5; in x * 2↵ services.nginx.enable = true;↵ function add(a: number, b: number): number {↵ return a + b;↵ }↵ body { margin: 0; color: #0f172a; }↵ const names = users.filter((u) => u.active).map((u) => u.name);↵ INSERT INTO books (title, year) VALUES ('Dune', 1965);↵ <a href="/about" class="link">About us</a>↵ UPDATE orders SET status = 'sent' WHERE id = 42;↵ .card {↵ display: flex;↵ gap: 8px;↵ }↵ const total = items.reduce((sum, x) => sum + x.price, 0);↵ const res = await fetch("/api/items");↵ const data = await res.json();↵ environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [ vim curl ];↵ { pkgs ? import <nixpkgs> {} }:↵ pkgs.mkShell { packages = [ pkgs.git ]; }↵ for name, score in scores.items():↵ print(name, score)↵ <button class="btn" type="submit">Save</button>↵ SELECT city, COUNT(*) FROM people GROUP BY city;↵ def square(n):↵ return n * n↵ squares = [n * n for n in range(10) if n % 2 == 0]

How to use it

  1. Click the text box. The timer starts on your first key.
  2. Type the code. Press Enter where the text shows the sign ↵.
  3. Type the spaces of an indent as they are shown.
  4. Read your WPM and accuracy when the time ends.

How the score is worked out

Speed in words per minute (WPM) is the number of correct characters, divided by 5, divided by the minutes you typed.

Why code is harder to type

The symbol keys are far from the home row for most people. You also press Shift more often.

Code has short names and few common words. You cannot use the rhythm that you have for normal text.

Your code speed is often lower than your speed with words. Compare a code test only with other code tests.

How the code test works

The text is 20 short snippets. They use JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL and Nix. The order is new each time.

A snippet with more than one line shows the sign ↵ at the end of a line. Press Enter there to start a new line.

A mistake on a symbol key goes into your weak keys list, like a mistake on a letter.

Questions

Which languages does the code test use?

It uses JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL and Nix. Each snippet is short, and the order of the snippets is new each time.

Why is my code speed lower than my word speed?

Code has many symbols and short names. Most people type the symbol keys more slowly than letters.

Do I type the new lines and the spaces?

Yes. Press Enter where the text shows the sign ↵. Type the spaces of an indent as they are shown.

Do symbols count as weak keys?

Yes. The page counts a mistake on any key, also on a symbol. The Weak keys mode uses only letters to pick words.
